Homework is not scary…if you’re scared of music theory, talk to your music teacher about ways to overcome your fear of what’s required. Taking a music theory exam offers many challenges and benefits and can be exciting! Are you afraid of memorizing? Do you question “why” a lot instead of accepting what “is”? What part of music theory don’t you understand? Sometimes my students feel anxious about playing their pieces from memory. Other times students question why certain signs and terminology are used in the first place. Gaining a clear understanding of fundamental music elements such as intervals, keys, scales and chords can be ‘daunting’, but it doesn’t have to be. Whatever the case may be, try to remember that music should not be two things: confusing or scary.
