One of the practice directions that my students feel most challenged by is the one where they are asked to “sing/say the words and play.” Sometimes students just outright refuse to sing and play at the same time. I usually try to encourage them to hum, whistle or recite the words just to have something vocal going on while they play the piano. I’m reminded sometimes of my mother and her wonderful singing voice. She has the voice of a real bird, an angel and a high pitch to suit. I often wished I could sing as well as she. If you can, take on a little challenge for yourself. Even if it’s a classical piece see if you can hum along or vocalize the rhythms as you play. I’ve even seen professional pianists on stage doing it while playing a live concert. It can be a bit distracting, but it’s fascinating to see.

Today is a new day. As we continue to recover from COVID, I find that my students are more open to new challenges. So go ahead…sing and play to your hearts content. You may find that you rather like it. I know I did. Have fun and I’ll see you on the next episode.
Love,
C.
